A (Fun) Fake News Lead

Just a little creative fun. We're taking an intro to media writing course and sometimes the instructor makes us try to come up with fake news leads based on a heading...and so we thought we'd "exercise".

Humor. It saves.

"In a twist of fate, two religious solicitors were shot dead in a Midwestern home when two men entered the house under false pretenses and wielded a Bible claiming it was a weapon of God. Reports indicate that a Stand Your Ground defense will be used, as the homeowners feared the life they love was being threatened."

(seems like in the right state, these days, that would be enough)

Zucchini Coming Out Our Ears

The Mother's garden is beginning to explode with produce, despite the dry and hot conditions the Midwest has been experiencing this summer, her gardens are starting to pump out tomatoes, eggplant (or, as they are called Europe, aubergine), zucchini (courgettes, in Europe), cucumbers, peppers, beans, peas...if you ask us there is far too many vegetables, we can barely eat and preserve them fast enough.

Yesterday, confronted with a giant bowl of shredded zucchini, we decided to do a little baking. We ended up with half a large bowl of shredded carrots too, leftover from last years gardening, that had been kept over the many months in a cool dark refrigerator and periodically repackaged in order to remove ones that had gone bad, preventing them from compromising the others. Add some over ripe bananas (the BEST kind for banana bread, hands down) and we had a palate of ingredients we could turn into works of tasty art.

So we set to work baking, and in the middle researched pickled zucchini recipes because low and behold, after shredding the eight large zucchini, four more appeared in the kitchen...

We found a few zucchini recipes, and tailoried one to meet our ingredient needs, thereby creating our very own zucchini and carrot bread recipe...which you can locate below. It's super low in fat, as there is no oil or butter in the recipe, simply two eggs, a very healthy fat.

The oven filled with large, and mini, loaves of our creations

(we also made a zucchini-raisin, and a carrot-banana bread, all of them tastier than the next)

Zucchini (courgettes) is a squash that is ready in the summer, as opposed to others like pumpkin and acorn, which are typically ready in the fall. Zucchini it generally better when smaller in size, about 7" or less in length, and are great simply sliced and fried in butter with some garlic, as well as added to many other dishes (vegetable lasagne for instance). Sometimes they grow fast, and before you know it they can be GIANT. Some can grow up to 3 feet (1 meter) in length, and while you can still fry them, and use them in other dishes, at that point they tend to be a bit more fibrous, which affect the texture after they are fried/cooked, and start to produce large seeds inside, which makes them great for scooping, cutting into chunks and shredding, but to the picky eater, no longer has the desired firmer texture of a young zucchini.

Alternatively you could also scoop out the halves, stuff them with different mixtures and bake them.
Or slice them and dehydrate them to use as snacks, or for storing and rehydrate for using in winter soups and stews. There is just so much you can do...and we'll be finding more creative uses for them, because we can't eat that many baked goods...and they are coming out our ears.

In addition there is a growing number of other produce waiting to be processed, dried, pickled, canned, frozen and otherwise preserved.

For instance, today we canned some green beans, a recipe we may share after we taste them in three weeks. Hint. They don't have dill, but instead basil in the ingredient list. Canned pickled vegetables are best after a couple of weeks.

Next week we will start on canning whole tomatoes, salsa, pasta sauce, and making green tomato mincemeat (great in pie!).

Anyway, if we aren't writing much these coming days it's because we're creating again...this time foodstuff. Distractions such as these are good, they make us feel balanced and healthy.

The following is our Zucchini Carrot Bread Recipe, most of these types of recipes call for a half, or more, cup of oil or butter, this one has neither, making it low in fat. This recipe is also light on processed sugar, and is therefore not as sweet as one might expect.

If you want to fancy up your creation and make a special breakfast or dessert, after it is cooled slice it and treat it like plain bread by make a super special French toast! Dip the about four slices in a mix of 3 eggs, 1/4 milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, melt butter in a frying pan on medium heat, and fry both sides until browned to desired doneness.
Serve with butter, real maple syrup, and a bit of whipped cream. Maybe some chocolate shavings.
There. Now we've made it unhealthy for you.
Want it a little healthier? Omit the butter and use yogurt, instead of whipped cream for a tangy sweet treat.
Make enough for two, and eat in bed for breakfast with someone special. They'll come back for more of all you have to offer.
We made some in muffin form too.
They cook in half the time.
We'd like to say you'll eat less by making them this way...but you won't.

Frankie’s Zucchini Carrot Bread
3.5 c flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon, ground
1 tsp ginger, ground
2 eggs
12 oz evaporated milk
1 tbsp lemon juice
½ c brown sugar
1 c zucchini, shredded
1 c carrots, shredded

- Preheat oven to 350° Celsius
- Grease an 8 x 4 (or similar size) loaf pan. (pan spray works well, especially if you want to reduce the calories even more)
- Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
- Whisk together all wet ingredients.
- Quickly fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients.*
- Place mixed ingredients into the greased loaf pan. The mix will be a little dryer than most quick bread mixes, but it still should easily come out of the bowl, and into the loaf pan, with relative ease.
- Bake in preheated oven for about an hour, start checking with a large toothpick or knife after about 45 minutes by inserting it into the top of the center of the loaf. It should come out relatively clean, with dry, not wet, crumbs, if any, adhering to the knife.

*Note: when making quick bread it's important not to overwork the mix, so try to incorporate the ingredients without too much stirring. Stirring activated the gluten in the mix and will make for a more dense, less delicate, crumb. If you like it to be a bit more chewy (we don't mind it sometimes) then it's not a big deal.

We wish we could send you some.

Hope you enjoy! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

The Double Edged Sword of Creativity and Talent

We debated on what to call this entry, which is more a mini-rant than anything. Ranting doesn't sound negative, does it? It's more like an opinion, we suppose, as is anything we ever write here that's not completely about our life. Second pick to the title chosen was "Everyone's A Critic, But Some Are Just Critical"

Either way, our entry today touches on bullying behaviors of people in public forums (social media, public comment boards, etc.), people who try to stifle the creativity of talented and/or creative individuals on the internet, safely behind their crusty computer monitors.

In the world of the internet (it is a world inside a world) people like criticize those who blog ("Nobody reads blogs", "I was going to start a blog and then I remembered I have a life", etc.), they like to look down on people who share their lives, have an opinion they want to communicate, people who use poetry, art, writing, music, pictures, words, to reach out to the world, help others, find solace and/or express themselves via the internet. They get labeled narcissist, full of themselves, or self-entitled. People throw around these words as if they know what they mean, but their very behavior reflects their own narcissism, and perhaps their jealousy. Those who can, do. Those who can't, criticize like a petty asshole.

Write about your life, and offer it up for free, and all of a sudden you're an attention seeker, a narcissist, silly...get a book published about your life and you're an author with an autobiography, someone to be appreciated or celebrated (or memoir..."memoir is a good name to call your autobiography if you want to let people know you're a douche"). It's unlikely published authors would be respected by the people who put down those who have a drive to write anyway. Don't listen to them.

A person 'gives away' talent, art, writing, music, their skills and they're considered nothing but silly or self-involved (unless you are the receiver of the 'service' of course); get paid to provide and create the exact same thing and they're a sellout; at least by people who are jealous, for whatever reason - lack of talent and ability, and being bitter about it, come to mind. For instance, when it comes to music you only need see the indie band who gets their song in a commercial, and goes from indie to mainstream, and hear/see the words 'sell-out' reverberated through music forums. It's a double edged sword. You're a whore if you do, you're a whore if you don't.

When some people read comments written in an open forum (such as places like Twitter, Facebook, etc.) that make it seem a negative, or a needy thing, to share ones life with others; the person saying those things is only stifling the creativity, and introducing needless doubt into the mind of the creative person, all because they feel threatened, jealous or angry about something, or they don't understand. Every time a person criticizes another based on everything but their talent and ability, their jealousy shows, they look petty and bitter (to us, anyway) - why else would one person criticize another? To what end? To make themselves feel better? That, is just a form of bullying, it's not being a critic of the art/talent, it's being critical of the person. If you don't know someone you really shouldn't be critical of them as a person.

We have felt this suffocation of expression, as we are sure others who write, create art, put themselves out there do, and luckily each time we feel it, and try to convince each other we should throw in the towel, stop writing publicly, we receive a DM, and e-mail, and @ message from someone saying how this blog has helped them in some way. So, we keep going. Until we have nothing more to say (it'll happen...one day) ...though that doesn't stop most people. (As of February 16, 2011 there were 156 million blogs in existence, no word on the levels of activity, however.)

We may not all be nice (we're not all nice, even to each other), some of us could care less about people (some of us hate people), and helping them (we're tired of helping people_ - this blog is for us first off - but some of us want to reach out a hand to people (some of us love people, and care a great deal for some of them) who are sinking in the quicksand of mental illness (because we realize what alone feels like, even though we are never alone).

This post is more about respect than anything. Respect people who take a chance, who leap, put themselves out there. Don't make it more dangerous than it already is. Leave your sword at home.

If you've ever felt dejected, discouraged, apprehensive to write based on what you've read or have heard others say/write, just remember, everyone is entitled to express themselves, everyone has a voice, and if you can and want to, share it, write it, let it out...someone will want to listen/read it. It's how the gaps in the world are closed.

~Ivy et al

(Note, all "quotes" are sentiment gleaned from the wonderful world of Twitter...where there is no shortness of bullying.)

Something About Boredom

Boredom.

People say it often…and a lot on Twitter, surprisingly.

“I’m BORED”…

What does it mean to be bored?

Merriam Webster says being bored is “the state of being weary and restless through lack of interest”…Wikipedia says “Boredom is an emotional state experienced when an individual is without any activity or is not interested in their surroundings.”

Boredom, is a word first recorded in a text by Charles Dickens, (Bleak House – 1852) and used to describe something “tiresome or dull" since 1768.

Our Grandmother (The Father’s Mother) used to tell us all the time that there is no reason for boredom. She made it clear to us that boredom was something people with no imagination experienced, probably at the age of 8 or 9 we knew better than to express “boredom” in front of Grandma!

But we were hardly ever bored as children anyway; there were books, paper and pens. Just those alone were enough to sustain us for hours and days. We just wanted to be left alone with books and paper.

So why do people get bored? Why do some of you get bored?

According to the guy who writes for Dragos Roua (http://www.dragosroua.com) “boredom is a state of anxiety and low self-respect.” He’s got some interesting things to say about people and why they get bored; instead of repeating it here we’ll just give you the link: http://www.dragosroua.com/how-and-why-we-get-bored/. You can figure out if he knows what he’s talking about at all.

This isn’t a super inspiring blog post, we know. Despite the fact we are many (which makes boredom easy to avoid)…when we are not many (because sometimes it’s just one of us)…we still don’t understand boredom, so we wanted to field the question: How/why do people get bored?!
In a world with book, movies, music, video games, cultural activities, internet (and EVERYTHING that entails), gyms, computers (non-internet attached and all that THAT entails), cable television…not to mention…imagination, paper, pens, craft supplies, art supplies…it’s endless…how are people fucking bored.

Sometimes we get anxious, all of us individually, and it’s not from boredom, it’s from the sheer amount of stuff we can/could/want to be doing!

There are no limits…how can anyone be bored with no limits?!

~Frank et al

Didn't like this post? Want more to read because you're bored? Yesterday's post gave an example of one of the ways we entertain ourselves, plus at the bottom some links to our best/more interesting writing on this blog. Check it our here: http://just-call-me-frank.blogspot.com/2011/11/show-and-tell.html

Show And Tell

Bet you wonder what we do all day, since we're hardly ever on Twitter during the daylight hours these days

Okay, so you probably don't wonder, but we're gonna tell you anyway!

We've started making designs for t-shirts/products. We're not going to make the link super public just yet, but our Friends on Facebook got the link last night, and we're uploading the images to an album there.

Some of the designs will have our better/more popular Tweets on them with imagery that corresponds...Want to see some samples?

Sure ya don't! But we're gonna fucking show you anyway.

Here is a sampling...so far we have nine designs...but we're not going to show you all of them yet...plus, we'll be making more over the next couple of days, as long as I can locate Ivy again. We're not all as creative as she is, and without her influence at all...yeah, I'm just going to have a few drinks.

American Standards...Toilets...setting the bar for America. :)This design is dedicated to our follower/"TwitterPal" @GASmithIV, he is a political inspiration to one of us.
We got the inspiration for this design from a follower (@JoeMacGiggity) who wrote the word in a tweet to us one day this past week.
Probably how Jesus would feel about people claiming to see him in their toast.
This one is a Special Addition version of a similar, but less "patriotic" design we did.
Here is an example of our "logo"...that's right...it's on a cutting board. It's also on a lot of other stuff though.
All of our designs are going to be on t-shirts, and BBQ aprons and ipad/laptop sleves and coasters, and travel mugs (you know, for wine) and all sorts of fun stuff!

So, yeah, that's what we've been doing, mostly because...well, why not? We can't spend ALL day on Twitter, and there is nothing to do in this fucking town...and we're not about to look for a job when we only have less than two months before we go to Europe with James (The Boyfriend).

Meh, it's exciting for us anyway...and we needed a break from writing.

Last weekend after Frank and us wrote the newest entry/next chapter to our life we became fairly "down in the dumps" for a few days, we didn't drink all weekend, we didn't drink until last night, actually. We were sad, and we lay in bed and felt like shit, mentally and physically. It took a lot out of us to gather our memories together, and the memories are becoming more recent ones, and it's stuff some of us are already trying to pawn off on each other, things we've tried to forget about...like The Other Girl., for example; because some of us would prefer to forget a lot. But that's not how we are going to operate anymore, so ... it's a struggle with each other.

We're better-ish now of course, we're just going to write about some things that interest us for awhile, and use whatever skills we have to pull through the next week or so...because, Thanksgiving, you know...the first one with The Brothers and The Mother since we were in our early teens.

We plan to get back to the painting soon, but the basement doesn't have the space (or lighting) for setting up the easel, and the garage is a bit chilly for now; The Step-Dad is having heat put in and an insulated door, because he's going to turn it into his "man-cave", so once he does that we can use it during the day as a painting studio. Ivy sure would like to get back to painting, we have a couple we need to finish and just ordered two rolls of canvas and stretcher strips to stretch about 18 new canvases. Until then, we have other things to do that help each of us cope with new living quarters.

It's all about keeping our head above water...when some days all we want to do is shove ourselves under.

~Catherine

P.S. In case you don't poke around here much, I imported our better stuff from our recommendations page, it's got some good stuff about mental health, food, art, opinion, even sex! It's also got stuff we've written about things that have happened to us this last year, things with friends, families and people we love(d)...the list goes on and on...you are free to read whatever you want of it...or not.
