Admitted

Admitted.

It's not what you think. Wait, what were you thinking?
Never mind.
We received news today that we will be officially admitted to the Communications program at the University we are attending. Currently the status is pre-communications. In an pre-study one must take certain courses, pass them with high grades (at least a 'B', usually), all while maintaining an overall cumulative grade point average set forth by the department. Once this is done the student gets to choose a faculty adviser to help them plan the rest of their studies and gets to officially declare a major. Or something like that.

So now we get to choose an adviser who will help us plan the path to finishing the degree, and ultimately to employment in our chosen field of study.

*gulp*

So, here's the thing.
While we know this is the right field of study, communications...we're...not confident.
To be specific, we're totally confident in our abilities in most all of the areas of emphasis we could choose...we're not confident in picking the right one.
And we're not confident in actually getting paid to use our education - which doesn't have anything to do with the job market, or the employment outlook for different tracks we can take with the degree (there are many). It's...something else. Something we can't put a finger on, a word or simple phrase to.

This year this body we inhabit will celebrate 35 years of existence (old!).
In all of that time we've been in the work force (since the age of 16) we've been fairly low-wage workers. The time's when the work was "high-skilled", we were either in a traditionally low-wage industry (professional cooking, which we have an education in), or just still paid very low (because it was for a nonprofit organization).
To add, our employment experiences have been...unstable (mostly consistently employed, but with a lot of jobs).
Now...

Well, we've been sort of online job searching in geographical locations we'd consider moving to, even though there is a still a year and a half or so to go...to see what's out there, read the job descriptions, the levels of pay (easily 3 times more than we've ever made)...but we can't imagine being employable...in a well paying job...that we'll be able to keep for more than a year.

That's the main crux of it.
Does that make sense? Does that sound weird?

So, we're already nervous about meeting with our adviser in a couple of weeks...do we tell the person about these fears? Or is it normal...?

In any case, we're officially being admitted into the department. And that's a pretty exciting thing.

It's Lost, So You Get This

Truth is we haven't written in so long because we felt the last thing we posted (the essay on Fair Minimum Wage) was important to keep at the top of the page.

This post is largely rambling (we're prone to it); skip past it and read something good that we've written.

We've been struggling with so much down time, feeling inactive is never a healthy thing for us. Sure, we have been working out on the elliptical, but the motor broke the first day of Holiday break and so there's no resistance setting, which makes for a poor workout. Sure, we could clean the house...but who the hell really wants to do that.

It's been hard to muster feelings of excitement for next semester. We've started reading one of the books, but can't find the usual joy in it. We have a lot of reading for next semester too.
It sounds like a stupid thing, but we can't imagine doing too much better than we did last term (4 'A's & 1 'B')...so it feels like there is such a small margin for growth. We did too well too fast. We'll never be able to maintain such a high level of grades. It's all downhill from here.

Stupid defeatist.

We're stuck between wanting to leave the house and go out and do something, and the fact that living in such a remote area means even before we get to said activity we will have already spent $10+ on gas (round trip)...and then once we're out it's just costs more money we don't have. So, instead, the gas money is saved for necessary travel "into the city" (going to the dentist, again. going to an eye doctor. getting a haircut before classed start again).
Not to mention it's so fucking cold. It's so cold in the house...can't imagine what it's like outside (but we have to go to the dentist [again] today, so guess we'll find out).
Plus. There's so many people out there...ick.

Social media distractions have been...mostly ineffective.
We've tried to paint to pass the time, we're probably a couple hours away from finishing one that we've been working on since 2011, and we started another one...but it's just not...as joyful to paint in the winter as it is to paint in the summer with the window open and fresh air and birds...

We've been fighting depression for days. It's exhausting. We should have been writing about it. Writing makes things better.
We'd love to just lay in bed all day and indulge in the darkness, but more often than not anything over 6 hours in bed makes our hips hurt, our neck ache, our back throb...

The last thing can remember from last night is laying in bed quietly crying. Why? Don't know. We wanted to get out of bed and write, but it was too cold to crawl from beneath the warm blankets. So instead we just lay there, curled into a ball, writing a blog post in our head that would have been ten times better than this, but now it's all lost...and you get this.

A Mental Illness Rant

This ranted started out as this:
"Let's just make people scared of the mentally ill. Thanks media, fucking thank you for erasing years and years of work to erase the stigma."
We posted it to Twitter.
Then to Facebook.
And then we started a comment, and as the comment grew longer, we knew this was the place for it.

This rant, if you will, is related to the tragic event known as the Sandy Hook Massacre (December 15, 2012).

You can't turn on the TV without hearing about it. CNN has been gleaning every dark nook and cranny for information that can be sought. It's rating feeding frenzy  Goodness even knows what's being said on Fox News. We shudder to think.

Today, on a treadmill, we finally reached a breaking point. One of the journalists of CNN was interviewing a man who said that the mentally ill should be locked up.

Some things are better said in a Tweet.
Watching the news this last week, listening to people bang on about mental illness, we have become...deflated, sad. Maybe even a little scared.

Some think that the mentally ill should all be locked up, but how do you choose who is "too mentally ill"? The child who had one violent outburst? Two? Three?; The person on anti-depressants?; The person on anti-anxiety medication?; The person who went to a therapist once, twice, three or more times? The person with a 10 year old diagnosis of schizophrenia, who hasn't been on anti-psychotics in years...

It's not the mental illness, it's the person. A person in not their mental illness. A person is a human animal, with urges, and desires. Sometimes that's sadness, sometimes that's anger, sometimes that's frustration.

A man gets angry, and hit his wife once. Is he mentally ill?
A child gets angry, and kicks a wall. Is the child mentally ill?
A mother screams out of frustration, throws a book against a wall. Is she mentally ill?
A little girl comes home from school, locks herself in her room and cried of frustration. Is she mentally ill?
A woman goes through a divorce, and needs anti-depressants. Is she mentally ill.
A college student is anxious about their future, and finds comfort in anti-anxiety medication. Are they mentally ill?

Any one of these people could be capable of committing a violent crime. You could be capable. You just don't know it yet.

Under the sheets in an Orwellian nightmare, this country has managed to turn everything that makes a person themselves, uniquely them, into a mental illness. The only feeling and emotion not considered a mental illness is happiness...as the country shovels happy pills down their throat. A billion dollar industry.

Who is mentally ill to the point being lock-up, and who isn't. Are mere threats of violence enough? Did the boy who shot up the theater in Aurora Colorado have violent tendencies (no). Who gets to decide? Call us crazy, but the government shouldn't be the one, and neither should you, or me, or us. When you start locking people up because of your irrational media driven fears, that's just another freedom taken away.

Some people who fear the loss of their gun rights are deciding that they could easily blame the mentally ill, instead of take some responsibility, and embrace a little compromise; perhaps, we should just lock up "the crazies"...because people who hug their guns tight, despite glaring problems, are obviously the sane ones.

No, we're not anti-gun, we've written numerous times here that we aren't. We are pro-regulation. Guns have a purpose: hunting and home security. Assault weapons, and many semi-automatic, are not designed for any of that. They are designed to kill a lot of people, fast. That's it. (A real man can kill a deer/animal, with a simple rifle).

People are people, they've been killing in the name of religion, in the name of land ownership, in the name of love, in the name of war, for all of existence. And it's never been considered a mental illness before.

There will never be an easy solution in country as large as the United States, with such a diverse population. There can be compromise, but the compromise shouldn't be blaming the mentally ill.

The "Crazy" Guy In The Garage...Part II

We wrote about him months ago, before our trip to England with James.

Right before we left this person, this "crazy guy" in the garage,  was admitted to a mental hospital

A few months later, upon our return, we got to find out how he has progressed with his medications.

The Stepdad said "crazy guy" had gone off his medications, because of the cost involved. Even though this man makes plenty of money at his job, he still could not see the benefit of medication he needed,  because, among other things, he is not mentally well.

He started substituting alcohol for his medications, which can sometimes feel better, but doesn't do the same job as medications. Even though we are usually against medications, in the case of diagnosed schizophrenia we are supportive of such medications.

This last couple of weeks this young man got admitted, again, not by The Stepdad and The Mother,  this time by his family (because it is hard to admit a person in the United States if you are not family) to a mental facility.

He has since been released.

He is here every day again. Literally. This house is his second home.

Tonight James worked several hours with him. All the while this man, on medication for schizophrenia, and other disorders, was drinking heavily.

"He can't drink on those! He shouldn't be driving" we told James, after inquiring as to the whereabouts of The Mother and The Stepfather, and finding out they had went to follow him home, just to make sure he would be safe.

James can tell this man is not taking his medication. When a person is schizophrenic you can tell. This young man (he is probably near our age), for whatever reason, has decided to not take his meds. Again. Less than a week after being released from a mental health facility.

It doesn't help he has a bit of a learning disability.

Yes, he works. A surprising amount of people who suffer from schizophrenia work. It's a common misconception that people with "severe" mental illness can't/don't work.

When we were diagnosed with the same disorder, over ten year ago, we were monitored by the hospital/medical professionals. The same should be done for this man.

We only write this tonight to help us, if anybody, realize the lack of care that has developed in the United States in regard to mental health; an almost revolving door response to mental health care, as medications grow increasingly popular...and real care decreases.

This man, a nice young man, with a smile on his face, is mentally ill. The people around him can tell. He has been admitted to mental hospitals twice in less than a year, yet no professional seems to be monitoring him. He has to depend on people who care about him, some times reluctantly, and tirelessly, to make sure he is safe.

It's just another thing that makes us sad.

Worshiping At The Flagpole of a False Idol

Amidst the outrage over the Aurora Colorado shooting by James Holmes this past week, there has been much speculation as to "why" this has happened. Pointing fingers, people blame guns/gun law, they blame movies and television, they blame, blame, blame...anything but themselves.

However, the most interesting (if you can call it that) blame we have come across is that of religion, or more specifically the lack of it; and while the people doing it are touting the responsibilities of humans, specifically non-believers, they are not taking any blame themselves.

The "religious-right" would have you blame abortion, blame secularism[1], blame growing gay marriage rights, and to put it in Dad's words..."...ask[ing] God to leave our country."

Yes, Dad, we quoted you, not to provoke, or attack, simply because it's a theme running through many opinion articles, reports, and comment sections of anything online related to the topic that we have read the last couple of days, and you summed it up nicely.

"We have asked God to leave our country."

But have "we", really?

First, as an ex-believer and a now non-believer, I was always under the impression that not only does God give you the choice to be a believer[2], but also states that punishment for choosing "wrong" will be in the afterlife, not punishment here on earth (until the very end, and we do not believe it is to be Revelations time). Of course, there are an equal amount of scriptures and verses to contradict those ideas of choice and punishment, and many other messages, as is the nature of the bible.

Blaming the secularists is probably what right-wing Christians; likely the same ones who want less government and taught freedom, but still want to govern your personal life, home and bed; and those who want to scare you and control you with religion would prefer you do. They persuade you into believing, into fear of  not, by using unfortunate outcomes of an overpopulated society at wits end with the way the government operates and controls its society, and the mistreatment of the human population; they want to homogenize the way of thinking for their advantage. It's what they would have you think, because they are afraid of being tempted by you, they are afraid of being wrong, and they are afraid of the unknown.

So, we've "asked" God to leave and now he is punishing "us" all with violent acts, performed by humans, that can easily be prevented/reduced with a little control of self, a little regulation of society, a little less universal hate, and a lot more universal love, tolerance and understanding. He's punishing "us" on earth for exercising the right to not follow him? Does that mean we won't have the aforementioned biblical punishment after life? He's not doing too many things to draw populous by creating fear.

But if you look closer, through a lens of scripture, you may find the root of the problem, and it's evil, if you so choose (and if you want to suspend reason and believe in God, of course).

The problem may actually be with the believers themselves.

Without even looking at statistics (which, yes, means we may be incorrect, but we doubt it, and we're willing to bet body parts on it), we're confident that most of the over-patriotic, flag loving, "God-fearing" citizens of the United States tend to be right-wing Christian Republicans. The same ones who tell you that all the evil, violence and bad things that happen in the United States is because you don't believe in their God; because you are okay with people marrying people they love romantically, no matter if they are a man or a woman; because you can accept that not everyone is capable of being a fit parent, sometimes bad things happen (rape, incest) and the fundamental human rights of an unwanted child are taken from them at birth, along with those of the woman who was denied her own freedom and rights; because instead of having your choices made by religious people, you choose to make your own choices. (That's called Freedom, by the way)

But lets get past those things, lets look at worship.

The first two commandments of the Ten Commandments of the bible clearly state you should have no other God, no other idol. They are so important that they are number one, and two, on a short list of requirements of being a decent person (according to the laws of Christianity).

Now, lets return to the over-patriotic, flag loving, "God-fearing" citizens of the United States. Worshipping their country, thinking it is better than an other country, holding it higher in importance than any other land, propping servitude to the country high in the air above almost anything else, being boastful about the country, putting what they think are its needs, as a whole, above those of the people who make up the country.

Reverent honour. Love. Devotion. Adoring regard. Allegiance. Ceremonious rendering.

Can you decipher those words between worship, and patriotism? Looks like the creation of a false idol of worship. If those words don't detail the worship of a false idol then I don't know what does.

Stand before the flag, devote yourself to the worship of the United States of America, in all it's glory.

In a country where even "the believers", (some might argue, the Christian government) encourage staunch consumerism, a worship of material wealth and money, "keeping up with the Joneses'" (Coveting, the breaking of a Ten Commandment).
Where Sunday afternoons you can find believers worshipping television, or working, or shopping, any number of non-religious activities (An unholy Sabbath day, and another Ten Commandment broken).
Where we will go to war with other countries, sometimes erroneously, and kill innocent* people (Though shall not kill...another Ten Commandment, broken).
And in a country where it's not illegal to lie, to bear false witness [Fact: It Is Not Illegal To Falsify News or Lie http://just-call-me-frank.blogspot.com/2012/06/fact-it-is-not-illegal-to-falsify-news.html] even about big things (another one of those commandments)...[3]

Those things break biblical rules, by the believers themselves; to say they have been broken by non-believers would be false, as religious rule applies only to those willing to adopt them as part of the religious path they choose. Those who have taken a stand for their choice, knowing the rules and guidelines set by their deity, and have broken them, are at faultm and therefore should cease pointing fingers at those who have chosen a different path, and take responsibility for the mixed messages they are feeding as example.

Perhaps it's not, in the end, a lack of God, or a banishment of him, but a mistreatment of the guidelines given to those who have chosen to follow Him; and even if it's is because "we" have asked God to leave our country; lets not even touch on the fact that is wholly arrogant that God views the world by country, and favours one over another; it is only those who have accepted him who have the power to deny him.

In addition, in the eyes of Him, a sinner, is a sinner, is a sinner, whether a non-believer or not, so to blame one group, over another, is ignorant.

Maybe it has nothing to do with a human contruction of religious ideals, created 2000 years ago based in mythologies far older than Christianity; maybe it has everything to do with humans being animals (a scientific classification based on set criteria**) with guns, with the capacity for higher-thinking and the ability to take responsibility, but the propensity to point fingers like children, and shroud ourselves in hate.

The bible teaches that God is patient and kind, yet teaches he is forceful and vengeful.
Teaches you killing is wrong, but to kill in his name is divine.
Teaches you that believing in him is a private and personal matter, yet calls for you to force upon others your personal beliefs.
Teaches you to love, and then to turn a cheek and hate people who are different (don't have the same beliefs).

Why would you want to worship a vengeful God anyway, if given the choice, peace, respect and responsibility to others seems, for me, a much more devin road.

Respect what other's believe, don't demonize them for their beliefs.

~ Frank et al

Please note: we don't believe in God, so this has simply been an exercise in thought and writing. As we do not beleive in God, we cannot at all think that God is punishing his believers, however, in the face that secularists are being blamed for all the ill in the world, then the argument above serves as just a valid hypothesis of blame.
These are the things that keep us up at night.

P.S. Dad, thanks for the inspiration, even if it wasn't the kind you hoped for, I love you, and even though we will never see eye to eye, you will always be our inspiration.

*Being a citizen of a country does not make one guilty, anymore than being a member of the United States makes it citizens guilty of the atrocities of the country as a whole by default, and therefore deserving of death.

**Popular is also the teaching of humans as animals (evolution) and the misconception (by religions) that an animal must be dumb, and without thought, and the rejection that humans, while animals, can be simply of a higher order of animals with different abilities, yet no less animals. The wild is full of animals with different sets of abilities, and evolutionary advancements. That's all we have to say about that...for now.

We are thankful for the freedoms that actually exist in the United States, while acknowledging they actually exist, some in greater form, in other countries of the world.

Guns, Guns, Guns...and Freedom

Now we just need to ignore all reports about the James Holmes, mass shooting in a Colorado theatre, incident, and all Tweets, so we can bite our tongue.
AR15 Assault Riffle
We are not anti-gun.

But seriously, gun laws don't mean taking away guns, they can simply mean better control. Nobody needs handguns and machine guns, let alone ones referred to as an ASSAULT WEAPON. You can't really hunt animals with them (unless you want it to be ground meat on the bone), they have no logical purpose. You can defend your "property" with a simple shotgun/rifle. Nobody needs a 100 round magazine clip.
Automatic weapon magazine clip
This man acquired FOUR of them LEGALLY in under THREE months? There should be a database that raises a flag on shit like that.

Maybe this could have been prevented if a person wasn't able to access so many WEAPONS in such a small fucking period of time. This kid was smart, a PhD student, a fraternity member, had only a speeding ticket on his record, and was a church-goer, who clearly had a mental breakdown; stress from school, from who knows what else, for some it doesn't take much. When they picked him up outside the theatre, without a fight, he said he was "The Joker" - clearly he is not mentally healthy. He is mentally confused. He needs psychiatric evaluation, help, and many many MANY years in prison.

Some have said he deserved the death penalty. We do not believe in the death penalty, an eye for an eye and you make the world blind, and stupid.

And then comes the blame...

Don't blame guns.
Don't blame video games, movies and television violence.

Blame lack of personal responsibility, blame society as a whole, for being so entirely fucked up about their personal "freedoms", so self-absorbed, that they can't imagine considering the freedoms of their fellow citizens, like feeling safe. Self-absorbed freedom, the cause of such relaxed gun laws that a person can go out and purchase two handguns, an automatic weapon, and a shotgun, in under three months.

Better gun laws, America, better gun laws, NRA...so that ALL Americans are FREE to feel safe. How about that, how about that freedom. There should be laws against stockpiling weapons, no matter who you are.

It's not a good thing that happened in Colorado today, it's not a good thing when any person, or group, stockpiles weapons, no matter how mentally stable they are on paper, and it all can be prevented, in many different ways.

A sad event, and as the world, as a whole, continues to struggle financially, as America divides each year, fighting over petty shit, while we go to war and kill, kill, kill, it will continue to break down the mental health of it's citizens, and as the news continues to sensationalize these accounts, it will seem the world is swirling into an abyss of anger, violence, mental illness, uncertainty, distrust and hate. It's meant to keep you scared.

We hope to be here for the day it starts to turn around, and the real freedom, justice and equality (those are the three words on the new American stamps we purchased this week) that people talk about is propagated; maybe then we can be civilized, peaceful, with responsible laws, and responsible compromise, and responsible citizens.

Guess we're not good with biting our tongue. Big f'n surprise.

Secrets of the Dead

An English Grave
© 2012
Last week, the last time we were in this village, we went for a walk in a cemetery.

There are a lot of above ground, and half-above ground, stone coffins in graveyards in England. With moss growing on them, holding on for dear life atop death.

Near the church on the cemetery grounds was a lone plot, the top portion of the old coffin jutted out of the ground. The headstone was too weathered to read the year, the name.

A View From A Grave
© 2012
I laid down next to the stone lid of the coffin in the damp green grass and stretched out, staring up at the blue sky, and the spring growth starting on the tree above. Probably creepy to some, taboo to others. I was curious about the person, the height of them and this seemed like the best way to figure it out; and it looked like a comfortable place to lay down. Europeans used to be much shorter, as did nearly everyone, compared to our 5'11" stature, anyway.

Graveyards are interesting. Dead people are interesting. Who was this person that now lays beneath the dirt, concealed by a wooden lid, or under a stone cover. What was their life like, what did they fear, who did they love, what kinds of things did they witness.

The finality, the fact of death, is what drives people to fear in life, and need to know what is at the end. The angst drives the desire to invent the concept of a life after death in order to pacify the unknown of nothingness. Fear, for many, is the reason to repent, to invisible ideas, for poor decisions made in this life. The comforting belief that somewhere, someone, has forgiven them, and when they go to this place, to be with this person, they will live a better life, because they were sorry for the things they did wrong in the first life. The unknown is what keeps people from living the life they have been given, and not just the unknown after death.

Laying there, staring at the sky, I listened. The dead hardly ever speak, and just because you lay next to their eternal resting spot doesn't mean they welcome you, or want to share their secrets.

For some of us nothingness is divine; for some it is scary. Some of us try to wrap our head around the unknown. It tantalizes us. We do not need for there to be a place to go after we depart this earth, we do not need forgiveness from anyone but ourselves - we actually prefer there not be a place after this, and to take responsibility for our own repentance here and now, and live here and now.

I think fear is good sometimes, it can be good. The fear that when this life is over, this is the end. We could have died once by our own hand. We almost died once by the acts of another. All it would have taken the second time was not coming back from unconsciousness. We wouldn't have known the difference had we not come back, but in coming back we know the difference.

This being the only existence people have to live, means one should live it exactly how they want, baring in mind nobody should impede on other people's lives, and overall happiness too heavily just for the sake of their own. Every day the difference is between life and death. You can die any minute, in any number of ways. It's not morbid to think about it, it's healthy to recognize it and live your life accordingly.

In some fear you can find happiness, because you have to. One chance. It's all you get.
When someone perchance lays next to your grave someday, what will you tell them?

At the end, when we are there, waiting in those seconds for the light, or the darkness...or the nothingness, whatever it may be, we don't want "would have", "could have", "should haves"...we want did, tried, tired and ready; and if someone picks of a flower grown from soil and our scattered ashes, we want something to tell them.

America The Anxious, America The Paranoid

“You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world” - The Beatles
We will preface this entry with the following: We are American. We are nobody. We are not a threat to the United States insofar as we feel we have a right to free speech, and we desire to exercise it, while we still can. At the end of this you may label us a conspiracy theorist*, crazy, completely off base, ignorant, stupid. We can accept that. We would die for our given rights of free speech, because it’s a right worth dying for; we just hope it won't hurt too much. This is our opinion.

The power behind this entry started weeks ago with our outrage, matching that of many, with the Congressional bill known as PIPA/SOPA, Censored: The More You Know. A bill Congress put into play for a pass which most people viewed as purely a piracy (illegal downloads of media) issue, berating those trying to stop it, while backed with very little information or research of their own, and the belief that people on the internet have no power. Deeper into the bill was obscurity that could be easily manipulated down the road, language that could have easily provided loopholes into any number of actions by the government in the name of security and patriotism, starting with basic censorship, a component of freedom of speech. The government already has the right to track or wiretap anyone’s phone they see fit, detain your laptop at the international border, restrict entrance to the United States based on your mental health history, as we mentioned in our entry Doing Freedom Right, Our 9/11 Post; meaning they're infringing on the privacy of foreigners. It's not beyond the borders of obvious that they have the ability to create a bill, or law, that may eradicate freedom on the internet.

Having said this, yes, piracy is an issue, but the likelihood for them to control such a thing is beyond a mere bill(1). Piracy goes back from before the internet when people copied VHS, and audio cassettes...you remember those archaic mediums, don't you?

The truth is something like PIPA/SOPA could have had dangerous privacy and freedom hindering results, and so the people who saw this acted accordingly and helped raise awareness, succeeding in stamping out the bill, for the time being. It's unlikely to think 115,000 websites including Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, and more (2), would have taken such a stand for something as base as piracy. They saw the danger, as did many.

How do we know any of this? Where are our opinions coming from? From thought and consideration, and people exercising their freedom of speech and exchange of information over the internet, which incidentally caused waves, and was finally the driving force the the stalemate of the bill in question.

The internet is a scary place…particularly for the people in control.

So scary that the FBI is seeking a developer to create a monitoring application for social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter(3), despite the fact that they are already monitoring it, albeit poorly, based on a recent news article out of Britain about two young people detained, and denied and barred entry into the USA because of a tweet on Twitter (4 & 4b).Yep...because terrorists would totally tweet about their plans...clearly, and with detail, on an open forum in front of millions of people. Obviously.

Today the irritating stone in our shoe reached its peak, came home to roost, driving us to write this entry after we read a message from The Father in our Facebook inbox, no doubt prompted by our sharing of the news article in question, on Facebook, regarding the two 20-something British couple. The Father expressed his concerns over a tweet we had posted over the weekend. (yes, for those of you who don't know it, our father indeed follows our blogs, our Twitter account, and is our Facebook friend)

He wrote us the following: “The build a bear idea on twitter could be cause for concern. every tweet is stored in the library of Congress and they key on certain words like what you mentioned putting in the bear.”

The tweet in question:
Now, he is an average Republican American. He does not suffer from any medicated mental health issues, he is not generally the paranoid type, that we have ever been aware of.

This made us more sad than anything, that people, our own father even, are being reduced to worry and concern, possibly fear, over something that falls under freedom of speech and expression. We responded, trying to say what we could to offer some understanding about how we feel about the issue, "It should be fine, and you know what, if they take Tweets like that seriously then there is a serious problem, a real threat is not likely to post things like that in [an] open forum. And if something happens, we are willing to go through interrogation and stand up for our American rights. We didn't threaten America, or even an American."

Now granted, the Tweet we wrote wasn't the nicest, but if you are familiar with Twitter it was pretty tame by some standards, and it was the result of our distress with being in public; Twitter is our outlet that provides us a level of sanity (as is this blog). Anyway, we're not here to defend our right to express our thoughts and feelings.

Wait. Yes we are.

What is scary about the internet, to the people in high power, in the growing world of social media and internet; a platform where people can share thoughts, experiences, opinions and ideas...freely; is it is a danger when one is trying to accomplish underhanded deeds. Just ask China about how their government feels about exchange of information and opinions.

The internet is a powerful place for social movements, for bringing together ordinary people with similar views to fight for a common cause(6). Say what you will about the people involved in the Occupy movement, and their motives, they were and are exerting their right to express their displeasure with the government, and the way things are in the world.

The internet is the birthplace of many other movements besides the Occupy movement of 2011, for instance the Egyptian uprising; the Spanish M-15  movement was organized on the internet; even part of the World Trade Organization (WTO) protest of Seattle back in 1999 was organized via the world wide web. The recent movement against SOPA/PIPA was completely internet based, a result that could have been hindered post-SOPA/PIPA bill, had it been allowed to pass. This place has power.

America is paranoid and anxious and the government likes them that way. Post 9/11, over the past decade, the rise in medications has increased by 29% in anti-depressants alone, and does not include anti-anxiety medications, or anti-psychotics, which have also risen sharply(5).  Paranoid, anxious, and sedated people are easy to control, easy to manipulate, easy to medicate, easy to capitalize on. In 1977 psychoanalyst Rollo May commented on anxiety, writing, “[Anxiety] has certainly come out of the dimness of the professional office into the bright light of the marketplace.” (7)

In developed countries around the world, France, The UK, Spain, you name them, they are faced with multiple terrorist attacks (xi), yet the freedom their government provides is seemingly unwavering, their government doesn't tap their phone, spread fear and misinformation(8). They aren't on tons of antidepressants, they aren't constantly living in fear. Why is America so anxious, so paranoid? In the land of the free and the home of the brave...they are becoming neither.

Everything feels like a fear tactic, an attempt against strong-holding the soul of America, to censor the country. Stay paranoid, stay anxious, stay sedated, it makes them money and helps them accomplish atrocities like stripping away freedom.

Maybe we’re just being…paranoid. We just think it’s best to be alert when you are a mouse living in the lions den, and we feel threatened. And we feel angry. And we feel scared.

This is just a jumping off point to many a topic. There are several directions we could have taken with this entry - further exploring our opinion that government profits from it’s fear tactics with prescription medication, and that people don't really like to think anyway because they feel powerless, and they are lazy; that religion has fallen out of favor over the course of history, and medication and public fear is a growing in attempt to regain the control that some theorize religion was created for in the first place; that it's easier to control a society that is anxious, paranoid, poor and has fallen under economic hardship. OR, how the Motion Picture Association, the same people who backed Congress in the SOPA/PIPA bill, recently funded a report (propaganda) to link piracy to organized crime and terrorism.

But we don’t have all day, and we've already ran around the track and probably got you lost. Also our blog isn't just for spouting our growing concern, and wack-o-noodle theories, about the country we were once so proud to be a part of; a country whose national anthem once brought proud tears to our eyes, before we started to pay attention, to think about the things we read and were being told. A country we miss, despite the fear we have for it's people, and the road it is going down backed with it's staunch blind patriotism. And we'd also like our family members not to feel fear for us just because we speak our mind. Too much to ask?

At the end of the day though, the internet is a place to share information and concepts, opinions, to connect with people. Fight against censorship, fight against the powerless feeling, to be heard, to hear others, to share in the human experience like never before. Some do it. Some don't.

What good it is to solicit that your country is better than others because it has freedoms, if you don't exercise your right to use them; it's like having a Lexus (or some equally fancy car) in your garage, but never diving it.

The "Crazy" Guy In The Garage

What's with the "crazy" guy in the garage?

The question on our mind.

He is a friend of The Stepdad, and we're pretty sure he has mild
schizophrenia.

Why mild? He is completely aware that what he is experiencing would sound crazy to medical
professionals, to us that seems mild (strong would be thinking everything he is experiencing is believable)

What is he experiencing?

To start this man has learning disabilities (
barely graduated high school), but he functions normally (just not socially), working for a business in town that generally employs elderly, developmentally and/or physically challenged people, but not exclusively. It's a very well known business.

So this guy has been working for his employer for 10 years, and recently he's been telling The Stepdad that this company has put a device in his head so that they can hear everything he thinks, says, and knows everything he does, and also something in his head is telling him things. (
we don't know the specifics of that)

His belief stems from a conversation he had back months ago with a fellow employee about a computer issue, and from there it unraveled his mind, and apparently there is someone at his work feeding his fears, telling him things, making him paranoid. It sickens us that someone would be doing this.

Weeks ago he started saying he was going to be executed, because of something that popped up on his computer screen. Lately h
is new thing is he getting life in prison for killing someone years ago, so he says. He believes he's killed someone.

He's been to talk to mental health professionals, at the encouragement of The Stepdad and The Mother, but he doesn't tell them everything because he doesn't want them to think he's crazy. The Mother & Stepfather talk to the professionals about him (they had his sign a release) and the professional say there is nothing they can do.

So this guy, who is clearly mentally ill, on top of having mental development problems, is going to work everyday, and he tells some of his co-workers that he's being "put away for life, yep, going to the big house". He doesn't sleep well, he thinks that almost every business in town is getting fed information about him, and his
whereabouts, by the company he works for, so that they know he is about to arrive at a place before he even gets there.

The Mother knows his boss, and they discuss his issues, still there's nothing anybody can do about it because the mental health professionals in the area refuse to do anything about it, or take it seriously, which makes The Stepdad pace around the house ranting about them not knowing what they are doing, and mental health professionals being, basically, worthless. [In our option mental health has gotten to the point where, unless they can throw pills at it, they don't really care so much. But that's just from our observation of a country developing a prescription drug problem] Also, despite the fact that his boss knows who is allegedly telling this guy things (the person in question being a higher-up), nothing is being done. It's really wearing The Stepdad thin.

So there's this schizophrenic with learning disabilities sleeping in a chair in the garage because he can't sleep well at home since he thinks the company that employs him is watching and listening to him all the time, and he feels safe here, so The Mother and Stepdad went to a wake and left him in the garage.

So why are we writing about this? A couple of reasons, and none of them really make us feel good about ourselves. The fact that he is mentally ill shouldn't bother us at all, obviously, but it makes us nervous, despite the fact we have worked around many people with schizophrenia. Most are not dangerous, but we've never had one (knowingly) in our living space...but it made us uncomfortable.

So we made jokes on Twitter a couple of times in regard to him recently, not mean, just matter of fact with a little twist (
twists that mainly highlight our anxiety/fear in regard to him), and now we wonder if that makes us...bad (if only in each other's opinion). It's no secret that mental health jokes on Twitter make one of us upset (mostly because they are ignorant, and not accurate), but we're not really making fun of him, or pretending we are ill...and when we write that we feel like we're trying to justify ourselves.

Hmmm...something for us to ponder on, at least.

Our Guest Blogger Writes About Fear (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month)

We don't have a lot to say about fear, other than we feel it a lot, we've written about it in our blog many times over the last 10 months; but we are sure there is nothing like the fear of breast cancer, waiting for results in the event of abnormal tests, and the fear after, that it may come back. We hope that is one fear we never have to know.

We have a message for our friend, guest blogger, Twitter-pal...cancer survivor, Kerry, you are a successful nurse, writer, and human being, and to fear, as you know, darling, is normal.

We love you, Kerry. You are an amazing friend, and as we have told you (and as James has also told you) we are here for you, to help however, to be supportive however, even if it's just to make you laugh about kicking puppies.

Thank you so much for sharing, with us, and with our readers, with the world. You are a strong and amazing woman.

Fear!

National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month Website:
http://www.nbcam.org/
Sometime it’s appropriate to share.  Sometimes it’s not.  Sometimes it’s a way to let others know and understand that I am human and not just a professional or a writer.  Sometimes it’s a way for me to sort stuff out in my head and I can bring you guys along for the ride.  This blog is about me and not like my other pieces.  It also comes with an emotional health warning, what I say may upset you.

I am afraid. I am sooo scared. My fear permeates everything I do.  It wraps itself around my heart and makes it difficult for it to beat to any rhythm.  My heart stutters and stops and flutters; unable to cope with the menacing presence of fear.  My fear works its’ way up my nostrils and into my brain.  It is there every second that I am awake and plagues my dreams.  It makes me not sleep so that I am so sleep deprived that I see people and things that aren’t there.  I love food and often over eat when stressed, but my fear turns food to sawdust in my mouth.  My fear is a snake in my stomach, writhing, wriggling, unable to let me put anything in it; making me feel sick; physically forcing food out of me.  It dried up my mouth so I can’t speak, and throttles me gently to stop words asking for help seep out of my mouth.  My fear dries my eyes and stops me crying, makes it impossible for my emotions that are welling up inside me to get out.  I am going to rip apart, my emotions are pushing and shoving to find some room, a space any space but there is none.  Some thing is going to have to give.

I look at myself in the mirror.  I’ve lost weight, I have always been a little bit plump so I look lean and toned.  I smile and interact and behave the same way and I know I look normal from the outside.  No one has guessed.  A few people know safe people who are kind to me; my boss at work in case I do not perform as well as I normally do.  I can’t sleep.  I am awake 20 hours a day, eyes open wide awake, tension in my jaw.  I have at least another 5 weeks of this to endure and I feel like I am going mad.

This is what has been happening in my head for the last 2 months, maybe more.  Earlier on this year I was contacted by some relatives and cutting a REALLY long story short, they had had breast cancer too.  Suddenly I went from being a ‘just one of those awful things’ type of cancer to having a family history.

I was sick, really sick when I was having treatment.  People thought I would die.  I thought I would die, and in dark moments I wished for it.  In my mind if I get cancer again I will go straight back to being that sick.  Of course this will not be the case; I will get there in stages as I did last time and this time treatment might be different….if I get it again.

A couple of months ago I went for gene testing to see if I have the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes which are linked with an increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Cancerinformation/Causesriskfactors/Genetics/Cancergenetics/BRCA1BRCA2genes.aspx feel free to read if you want to know more.  What this means is that if you have these genes, your body does not take 60 years of environmental damage building up in it to develop cancer.  It happens much sooner.  It could be the reason why I had breast cancer at 32.

There is a plethora of treatment options, ranging from screening to surgery.  It may mean that everything I have that differentiates me as being a woman may be gone, cut out, removed.  I am only 36.

I have come to terms that I only have one child and I am immensely grateful for that.  I could not cope with the fatigue of having another baby, physically or psychologically.  Now the choice may have been taken away.  My son is unaware that I have had this test and I will not tell him until I know what the result is.  All he knows is that Mummy is not sleeping very well at the moment.  It is up to me to keep him as safe as I can.  I will only tell him when I have facts to show him; not worries in my head.

There are implications for him.  If I test positive it will affect his ability to get life insurance, mortgages and other loans in the future.  If I have the genes I may have passed them onto him but I am not feeling this guilt yet, the fear is all encompassing.  It has implications for other family members too.  If I have the genes then they will be able to gene test them and find the results much faster as they will know where to look.  My geneticist said that it was like looking for a spelling mistake in the bible.  There is also a chance that they might miss it and I still have the gene although I will be told that I do not have it.

I think that’s the reason I can’t tell people, because it may or may not be the case.  I may or may not have the gene.  I may or may not develop cancer again.  On the positive side, if I do not have the gene I remain high risk of the cancer returning, so nothing will have changed.  Life, it would seem, is forcing me to look at my own mortality again.

People want to ‘rescue’ other’s in distress (see my blog entry on suicide for furtherdetails). I know that if words slip past my lips people will tell me that there is no use in fretting, that I don’t know if it will happen yet, no news is good news, stop looking on the gloomy side.  The consent form for the testing stated that this test may cause anxiety; I am not anxious per se just afraid.  I do not want people to dismiss my fear because they find it difficult to cope with.  I can’t handle their emotions as well.

I have a wry smile to myself when people perceive me as a successful nurse, writer, and human being.  I do not show them this fearful wreck shivering in the corner.

I follow #FeelEmFriday on twitter. Where a group of us, men as well, have avi’s (profile pictures) of our breasts (in bras) or the men’s chests to promote self examination to prevent this disease.  Some people on twitter do not like this and say horrible things.  My avi is a black bra with pink trim and spots on it.  Promotion and prevention is the key and I will always support people who do things to help others.  It is fun and silly and makes me, and others, giggle.  A bit of light relief in the dark.

I will cope and I will get through this.  I do not know many more people tougher than me.   When I know what the results are I will be able to fight or be relieved; but at least I will know and I will deal with the results head on.  But just for now, just for you, just here I thought I would take my mask off and show you what’s underneath. Thank your for reading.

A 'State of the Union' Re: The Visit of Our Twittercrush James

If we’re going to be honest, and we usually are, some of us are terrified of next week.
If you haven’t been keeping up, next Thursday one of our Twittercrushes (@mr_jmm) is coming to visit for 32 days. 32 DAYS. THIRTY-TWO DAYS. 4 ½ weeks…FOUR AND A HALF WEEKS…

We’re used to being by ourselves almost every minute of every hour outside of work , except for the few hours a week we spend with Fabulous People, and when we go drinking with Fuck Face (our manager, drinking partner and ex-lover); and since Fabulous People has had gardening to attend to and mini-Fabulous Person has a new boyfriend, we have not seen them in a couple of weeks outside of work. We have also not spoken to The Pup in weeks…we don’t know where he has gone…*sigh*

In attempt to sort out everyone’s feelings, our feelings, about the matter at hand, the invasion of our personal space; we decided to sit down and write it out, which is essentially this blog entry.

Writing is our only way to work through issues, aside from shoving them to the back of our mind and have them keep popping out like a hernia. We’ve learned long ago, if we keep evading issues in our life they never go away, no matter how much we will them to.

So, don’t mind us as we do a roll call of who feels what about this impending visit…it’ll help us to understand and help others understand how we deal with issues like this, hopefully to our readers who may struggle with similar DID/MPD issues it will help them some time in the future.

…we’re nervous…

We’ve been trying to talk with each other about who is worried about what. We can’t get everyone to talk, Bethany has been MIA for awhile, we’ve only talked to her for brief moments here and there, and then she disappears. We figure she doesn’t like the drinking we’ve been doing and she’s becomes scared for our future when we start to worry about it, which is a lot lately. There is just too much stress for a young thing like her to deal with lately. We are sad for her, and we miss her dearly. Her lack of willingness to spend time with most of us makes us cry. She is sweet, and wonderful and happy…and innocent. She doesn’t understand how much we need her.

Of course Emmie is excited, but to be honest, she still has a bit of a thing for Fuck Face and we can’t deny it. We did love him, after all. She enjoyed many things about him, his intelligence, his demeanour…just him; but she is also Emmie, and she probably liked him because of the willingness he had to please her every sexual whim. It doesn’t help that she is reminded by him daily that he is still willing to satisfy her urges; given his transition to barn living to basement living, he is still very interested in continuing an extra-marital relationship with us, and he has also become very kind, and gentle and compassionate with us; it’s been throwing us off a bit.

The Twins (Catherine & Cassandra ) are in love with someone else, he’s never been mentioned here, he may never be. He is someone they have been talking to and seeing, someone nobody knows about outside of the system…this will shock and disappoint at least one person reading this entry. For reasons outside of control we will not/cannot have a relationship with this man, and it will be that way until the foreseeable future. They are very fond of this man in question…a man whom has only been mentioned once, very obscurely, in this blog.

Sam, poor Sam…it will be unlikely that he will get a mate of his choosing (who for him would be a female)…ever; but he holds on to hope that we will assuage his desires by finding a man who is willing to at least share us with a woman at some point. In the meantime he can continue to “hide in his room” whenever possible and is happy to have the idea of a man around who he can identify with on some level.

Ivy…is full of love; she cares and has such emotions that it’s hard to control. She likes James a lot, but she is conflicted by the feelings that the twins have for this unnamed man. She doesn’t have much to say, she is quiet and reserved and wants to observe more before she makes her decision.

Frank – because Frank loved Fuck Face and lost, she is resigned to give all of the others a chance to choose, something none of them have had a real chance at. To be honest, I hate talking about myself in the third person right now, so let’s just say…I am reserved. I like James,  I like this unnamed man that the girls are “infatuated” with…I don’t want to make the decision on this one…I’d rather stand back with Ivy and observe what the others think. I had my chance and I did us all wrong by it. I’ll never forgive myself, but at least some good came of it. (the destruction of The Other Girl)

Melody – Melody, for once, actually is showing signs of feeling for someone, and it happens to be our Twittercrush, James…it’s strange, her feeling like she wants to have an opinion. It’s strange and we need to analyze and talk to her…because it’s unprecedented that she would have any emotion, one way or another. She spends most of her time away from us though.

The unnamed Alter…because we have not had time to get her to “group” with us…we know she’s taken over a time or two…but we don’t know her name, we’ve been too stressed to work any more on our mapping (life has been throwing stress sheep at us) but we know when she takes over it’s usually brief and uncomfortable for us…. She is not nice to us in general, and gets very angry. She likes us to be sad, and like us to be mean and like us to be jealous…we don’t like her much and She knows it, but that doesn’t stop her from ramping up on us.

We are scared. We are scared because the last time it came down to two men it meant the destruction of The Other Girl. Those among us cower in the recess of our mind whenever we try to discuss these matters, afraid of their destruction. Nothing that is said can assuage them. The stress of everything else in our life, and this, has created a starburst effect on several occasions in our head.

Back to James’ visit…

We are scared because our space will be invaded, we will have no privacy, no time to ourselves. We’ll be honest; we yell at nothing a lot, we yell at our cats a lot, we yell at each other a lot, and there will be someone here that asks questions, who we might scared by our behaviour, who wants to know how we are feeling and because it takes so long for us to come to a conclusion as to our feelings we are afraid we will answer wrong, answer for only one or two of us without knowing what those who are sharing co-consciousness are feeling, without knowing how the others are feeling…

We’re scared, because we’re angry, we drink too much, we do stupid things, we make dumb decisions, we never know how we feel as a system … we lose track of things, of time, of information, of ourselves…
Bottom line, we’re scared…we’re scared because for the first time since the existence of us, almost 16 years…we will be living day by day with someone who is well aware of the We…

We’ll just be over here…finishing this glass of wine…terrified…

-Please note…this entry will have typos…sorry…-

(First time here? Who the hell are all these people we are talking about?! Check out our other blog where we work on the mapping of our Dissociative Identity Disorder/Multiple Personality Disorder:

DID/MPD Mapping

Mapping is a technique used to learn about an individual's internal personality system. The client is asked to draw a map or diagram of his or her personality states. As therapy progresses, the client is asked to update the map. Also known as personality mapping or system mapping.[source: http://www.healthline.com/galecontent/dissociative-identity-disorder-multiple-personality-disorder?print=true]
