Notes to Selves

(<<<< if you're not us you can read the previous post, or if there is a newer posts than that [because we have to come back later and write] then read those >>>>)
Dear us,
Please get Bethany a new colouring book today for goodness sake (she's only been asking for months); also…she wants those footy pajamas you saw yesterday when you were out shopping.
I was instructed to relay this…apparently Bethany was being irritating about it while Catherine and James were being intimate (ick) last night; in addition to some of you being generally distracting...you know who you are, and you know what you were saying.
You made her cry, jerks.

Who Lives In Your Head? Mapping Therapy and DID/MPD.

Obviously we write a lot about Dissociative Identity Disorder here. [formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is the manual used by the American Psyciatric Association]. Multiple Personality Disorder/Dissociative Identity Disorder is not a a personality disorder, such as antisocial, avoidant, borderline, narcissistic, obsessive-compulsive and/or schizotypal type of disorders are classified; DID/MPD is a dissociative disorder (for more on that read a previous entry we wrote: 'The D in DID: Dissociation' http://just-call-me-frank.blogspot.com/2011/08/d-in-did-dissociation.html) which is grouped with other disorders such as depersonalization disorder, dissociative fugu and dissociative amnesia. It often gets confused with personality disorders, most commonly, amoung them, Borderline Personality Disorder.

We write about MPD/DID because we "suffer" from this "disability". Obviously if this is not your first time here, and you've read the header of this blog, you know this...you'd be surprised how many people don't read it.

So. You might be asking, why the quotations on those words? In ours, and other people's, opinion using words like "suffer", "disability", and others such as "survivor", indicates a weakness.

DID/MPD is not a weakness. People with MDP/DID lead relatively normal lives, it does not mean they are disabled; they date, they get married, they have jobs, they have children and grandchildren. It's a disorder that is easily masked to strangers and family members; even to the alters themselves.

However many times, in order to be successful at living a "normal" life, some sort of therapy is needed (though generally a person with the disorder has already seen 7-8 years of therapy and undergone several mis-diagnoses, like us, before they reach the diagnoses of MPD/DID1); and the drive to not be labeled a "victim" and let negative alters keep them down, as also essential to living "normal". Yes, there may be some suffering without help, without support from friends, family and loved ones...and it varies from peoples to peoples, but that doesn't mean they have to "suffer from the disorder" from what we can tell, pain and suffering happens to everyone, and it's probably the most "normal" part of the disorder.

Having said that, without the proper mental health professional to guide them, or the will to work with themselves, in the event there is no therapist/psychotherapist who deals with the disorder, such as in our case, it can be a terribly destructive disorder for the people experiencing it, and sometimes for the people in their lives. Sometimes it can lead to self-harm, depression...even suicide.

One of the therapies used for DID/MPD is called mapping, and is not hard to work on independent of a therapist. Mapping is a technique used to learn about an individual's internal personality system. The client is asked to draw a map or diagram of his or her personality states. As therapy progresses, the client is asked to update the map. Also known as personality mapping or system mapping. [source: http://www.healthline.com/galecontent/dissociative-identity-disorder-multiple-personality-disorder?print=true]

You (assuming you are a singular, and not a plural) probably don't wake up in the morning wondering "Who am I" (though, to be fair here, we don't usually do that either, unless questioned); you likely go through the day doing things you do the same every day, probably rarely looking back at the them, having vague memories (or sometimes no memory) of events and actions and think..."Why did I do that?", "What the hell is my problem"...or maybe you do (HaHa!).
Your thoughts and feelings likely match, and you have a lot of control over them one way or another (i.e. letting them, or not letting them, visibly match on the outside), your opinion on a subject doesn't vary wildly from one day, one minute, to another, as far as outsiders can tell at least. It's probably safe to say your thoughts and opinions are fairly congruent.

Side note: This description is not to be confused with people who have a "public" them and a "private" them, which people like to joke about by misusing the term "multiple personalities" and the "their other personality" to describe, lets say...being a sluttier. meaner, etc. version of their self. [P.S. It's also disrespectful, one lying about having any other health issue would piss any rational person off. Imagine you make jokes about having cancer when you don't actually have it? While most of the time it makes us roll our eyes when we see those (MPD) jokes, on occasion it pisses one of us off, when he happens to be around he'll be confrontational about it, though usually we send him to write, if we can maintain control. For example: http://just-call-me-frank.blogspot.com/2011/05/sam-gets-set-off.html]

Holy crap, veer off track much? Goodness.

So, back to the mapping.

Mapping, as well as the writing of this blog, is what we do for therapy. The purpose of mapping is to attain a general sense of our Others (Alters), I am sure some of us have written about it a time or two, added little bits at the end of a post on occasion and mentioned we have a whole other blog dedicated to it - though it's been on hiatus for some time now, because of the many changes in our life. http://wearejcmf.blogspot.com/ is where we use words and pictures to communicate to each other who we are, in addition to this blog. (Why we do it publicly at all? To help others who live with similar disorders, and people who have a loved one dealing with these things; which we have, and we know this because of e-mails and Twitter DM's of thanks). When you have a system that disagrees on many things, it's nice to map, and write, and figure out who is who.

We started this blog a year and a half ago, out of a need to write, it took a long time to start writing what we needed to, nearly 5 or 6 months, though the one of us that is no longer part of us (The Other Girl, our core*) wrote a journal on a separate page of this website, she did not want to face, fully, all that was happening; mostly we used the entries in the early days, as we do now, as a line of communication, because we were wildly confused; we're a bit better now. Part of the writing therapy was to write about our past abuse, the goal was to process it so we could lead to a sort of "healing".

Now that we've used writing therapy to write about the multiple abuses we can collectively recall (though there is some questions remaining about Bethany's memories, and other missing pieces) from our past, we realize that taking this endeavor unassisted, writing about our past, could have been potentially dangerous. And so we want to make sure to convey to others who may be attempting this, that it should be monitored by at least one person who knows what is going on. In the time it took to come to terms with us, and write about the abuse, we got to a severely low weight (by some standards, though we do have some food related issues), we were not eating or drinking much of anything, we were barely holding on during the work week, and crying and screaming all the time (even AT work sometimes), we were just a fucking mess. Thankfully we had Fabulous Person, our only real life friend remaining (aside from occasional correspondences with Fuck Face). Fabulous Person (and her daughter) were there for us when one of us would call, scared, crying, sometimes yelling, screaming and ranting, and to ask to be put on "suicide watch" by her. We trusted her, as we do today...but that's more of the story for the final chapter(s) of what we started writing at the start of the year, our life, complete (as it can be). It wasn't all bad. Emmie managed to get us involved in some crazy shit last Spring...stuff that makes some of us blush, and others wish her ass wasn't our own so we could kick it.

The point is, getting back to that, because yeah, we have a point; mapping therapy is a legitimate form of therapy for people dealing with DID/MPD. It's a fluid journey that is not always constant, but we recommend it for people living with the disorder because it leads to strength and understanding, and if you so choose...integration (not the route we want to take, and not the route James, The Boyfriend, wants us to take). Today we woke up and we know we are 10. Earlier this year we woke up and Frank only knew herself, and two others. It's not uncommon, the fluidity, it is growth. It's also not easy. But it's a journey we never want to take back, that we wish for others like us, and now that we know the mapping, we can uncover the fragments in our system, if there are any, and work together as a team.

Huh. That wasn't supposed to sounds quite so uplifting.

Boobs.

*Dissociative Identity/Multiple Personality Disorder common terminology

Personality Specific Terms
Alter: alter states, selves, parts (a subjective term); distinct personalities; fragments alternate personality, personality state, or identity with its own unique perspectives, abilities, memories or other traits that differ from the Host or Executive personality.
The Core: The original birth personality.
Host: is the alter personality who dominates the control of the body most of the time and is often unaware of the other personalities. The host is usually the alter personality who will initiate after experiencing symptoms of mental distress, such as, anxiety, triggers or recovered memories.
Executive: When a personality (alter ego) has control of the body.
Switch: To switch from one personality to another. The process of an alter coming out from the subconscious mind into the consciousness mind while the other alter (who was already in the consciousness mind) slips back into the subconscious mind.
Who's out? A common question used to determine which personality is executive or host.
Co-conscious(ness): A state of being aware of what the other personalities are doing and saying.

Other Common Terms:
Acquired: Anything that is not present at birth but develops some time later. In medicine, the word "acquired" implies "new" or "added." An acquired condition is "new" in the sense that it is not genetic (inherited) and "added" in the sense that was not present at birth.
Triggers: Hysterical conversion symptoms or body memories. Physical phenomenon such as pain, smells, tastes, etc.; re-experienced again.
Dissociation: In psychology and psychiatry, a perceived detachment of the mind from the emotional state or even from the body. Dissociation is characterized by a sense of the world as a dreamlike or unreal place and may be accompanied by poor memory of the specific events, which in severe form is known as dissociative amnesia.
Re-live: A total memory recall (includes visual, emotional, physical and all other senses).
Losing time: Also known as a Dissociative Fugue, is the period of which an alter personality is in the subconscious mind and has no recollection of the time that is being utilized by the alter personality who is occupying the conscious mind. Therefore when the alter switches into the conscious mind they realize that minutes, hours, days, or even months and years have passed since they were last aware of time.
System: is the structure of relationships between the alter personalities who live within the internal world of a survivor with D.I.D. Every system is created and operates in it's own unique way, just like every family living in their own homes run their households different from the next door neighbour.
Inner (Self) Helper: is usually the alter personality who has a good understanding of the system and how it works. The I.S.H. is also among the typical group of helpers or protector personalities.
Grounding: is the process of disrupting a dissociative episode and is accomplished by tugging on an earlobe, rubbing the hands together, or shuffling the feet back and forth. This type of physical stimuli can bring the survivors mind back to awareness of their surroundings, and helps to make them feel less animated.

Remembering Grandpa

Two days and two years ago, today...at the young age of 79...

We've written about Grandpa in some of our posts this year, and in some of the stories about our life. He truly was an amazing man. Over the past 15 years or so of our life we've found out a lot about our grandparents, and the unconditional love had for each other. It's the kind that makes you believe that, for some people, it exists...or it used to when times we're simpler.

They were honoured as the local Heritage Couple in the community where they lived, and they were just shy of their 60th wedding anniversary...he was father of 7 children, grandfather to 17 and great-grandfather to 6; he buried a son, and a grandson. He was a hunter, a fisherman, a farmer, a gardener (always proud of the huge potatoes, carrots, and produce he grew), a christian family man that worked hard until his last days, when he diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed within a month. His passing had a huge impact on our life, and our decision to be open about our mental illness. We never got to say goodbye to him.

Memories of him will never be forgotten by any of us...; he always made a grumpy face when he had his picture taken; he liked to try to scare the grandchildren by pushing his bottom dentures out of his mouth and growling; how when we would kiss him on the check and he would giggle and pretend to be shy; how he would tease us about all of the boyfriends he imaged we had; he was a quiet and serious man, but silly and funny, he loved to play cribbage and socialize...and he sure made the best coffee...

This was the song they played at his funeral accompanied by pictures of him when he was young, as a high school football player, then as a husband and father, and a grandfather, visiting with friends, photos of him with the produce he was so proud of, pictures from hunting camp, and then holding his great-grandchildren in his arms.

He was the kind of man whose love for his wife and his family was the kind everybody should aspire to have, and makes us miss him, today and always.

The Muppets and a Mini Rant

..because, you know...why not rant a little. It's a free country, hypothetically, where we live...

We saw the The (new) Muppet movie last night, and, while we will not talk too much about the great stars that they had do cameo’s, or the funniest scenes (because we don’t want to spoil it for people) that had us giggling, clapping happily, and laughing (yeah, sometimes we do those things, what of it?!) and the music causing us to bop our heads…(except for most of the music that wasn’t classic Muppet tunes, which, no…just, NO..who wrote the new stuff. Ick!)

...classic...*love*

We WILL say…the underlying message of the movie was uplifting, and while it may not have lifted us up long (because many of us tend on a cynical bitch most of the time), it was a great message for the younger kids, with the great retro appeal reminding of a different time for the “older” folk (not THAT different, but…different...).

Two step forward and one step back, it may be a slow pace, but eventually you get there...Hopefully; though, it's altruistic to think that all of a sudden the people of the world will all stand back and realize "Wow, look at this shitty world, look at these shitty people, who have we become?!" and change.

Existence of the human race will depend on positive change...because, without things like The Muppets, we'll all be Moopets. Nobody really wants that...because, they're just not nice looking. #superficialstatement *sigh*...but the world is full of Moopets...and we miss the Muppets.

The state of the world, since The Muppets first arrived on the scene in the late 50’s is dire, full of accelerated mistrust, greed, jealousy, anger, depression, manipulation….

People will say “Well, that’s how it’s always been” but you know what? No. That’s not true. While societies have always contained elements of that, honestly, if that’s just “how humankind is”…there would be no humankind.

There are things throughout history that have complied to propagate those characteristics, those very animalistic qualities of humans; and people will use “being human”, “being an animal”, and it being “just the way it is” as an excuse to continue the behaviour…but how about being better than that? You don’t have to lose yourself, who you are, in learning to be aware of others…and you also don’t have to even like people in order to be a decent person. You just have to try to do better, and not be a complete fucking intolerant asshole all the time.

Life is short, we all fucking die in the end, what are we all fighting for? For the youth? Look at them; look at what they are learning from generations of growing, compounding self-interest, greed, hate, intolerance…

The real Muppets are back, hopefully for awhile (we saw Kermit in a commercial for Pistachios today!)…and while we’re not overly (AT ALL) excited about Disney owning them now; they bought the rights to them in 2004, after years of trying to acquire the rights; we’re happy someone dusted off the Muppets and put them back on the big screen as a classic Muppet movie feel. The Muppets have done several low-rated TV specials, and one other movie ('The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz') since Disney bought them seven years ago, but those newer movies are nothing like 'The Muppets Take Manhattan', or 'The (original) Muppet Movie', where they portray the possibilities that come from people caring and working together. We won't even mention the magic of the show, though, admittedly, what we love of them are only from syndication when we were children, we’re only 32, after all...

So what do the Muppets, and the underlying message of The Muppets (new movie), have to do with this little rant and the growing despicable and ugly characteristic of humans, and the general randomness of our entry? Figure it out.

Meanwhile.

In honour of our favourite holiday movie (yeah, depends on which one of us you ask, some of us HATE all things Christmas…but some of us have more reasons that others to dislike it)...the 1987 'A Muppet Family Christmas'...a clip to get you started (the four others are on YouTube)...but you can also find the whole one on yours (or your friends) favorite Torrent site.

Wait, so...what’s our (and other people’s) beef with Disney?

For more...here are some biographies...http://www.flashlightworthybooks.com/Best-Walt-Disney-Biography/189 while there are many biolgraphies here, no doubt backed by the company itself, the one most interesting is the book 'Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince' – yes, we’ve actually read the book…and it's enlightening, informative, and..amazing. More interesting stuff about the Disney company itself: http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Disney/Interests.html (Special Thanks to @ChristianPlante for the link.)

So our rant, it's Saturday, we're distracted, so it might nor be great. Read more here...there are a lot of "good" links to our "better" writing here: http://just-call-me-frank.blogspot.com/p/our-recommendations-weeded-from.html (also, there is a tab for that page above...but...meh, whatever)

AudioBoo. Who Will You Boo?

*as usual links provided here, if not taking you to one of the pages here in the blog, or on our other blog, will only take you to relevant links, we do not condone word link advertising, or any of that other bullshit*

BOO! (warning, the following boo contains the "F" word)

What? You people suck...now we"ve done this horrible boo... (mp3)

Yeah, no...we haven't had a glass on wine at all. (That was recorded last week)

So, AudioBoo…you may have seen the term (and the links) floating around Twitter or other places on the internet. We’ve definitely seen people asking what it is, so we thought “Hey, we’re totally uninspired for writing topics and going of our mind with stress this week, lets write about AudioBoo!”

Last week we opened our first AudioBoo account, and took part in an AudioBoo throwdown of @C-J_Commode’s tweets (see Tumblr post for reference: http://jstcallmefrank.tumblr.com/post/13355942678/the-c-j-commode-audioboo-throwdown). After a sufficient amount of wine we were comfortable enough to give it a whirl, even though the final recording was the audio version of double exposure, parts recorded over itself, and conversation with The Boyfriend somehow got recorded in the middle of it…but ultimately it ended up funnier that way, so we left it (after contacting AudioBoo via and @ on Twitter about the recording error).

Some people have said (okay, Tweeted...same thing) things like, before you know it we'll all be calling each other on the phone and that AudioBoo just seems like a replacement to phones and phone messages.

Here's why it's not: It's broadcast to many people at once (usually); you don't have to run the risk of someone actually picking up the phone and having to have a conversation with that person (because, ICK!); other people don't have to listen to you. It's actually kind of fun...if you can find creative ways to use it...like AudioBoo throwdowns in conjunction with Twitter. (more about that at the end of this "article".)

AudioBoo is a “mobile & web platform that effortlessly allows you to record and share audio for your friends, family or the rest of the world to hear”, which started as a small project by Mark Rock in the UK in March 2009, and with the help from a very specific fund provided by Channel 4, a local public UK channel (think Public Access) became a business in 2010. It was launched with the AudioBoo boo of Stephen Fry, a author, television presenter, comedian...a national treasure of the UK. His Boo’s: http://audioboo.fm/stephenfry)

AudioBoo is free to use and records up to 3 minutes of audio, you can use your mobile device, or you computer, and share it across different internet platforms - such as Facebook, Websites, Blogs, and of course, Twitter.

The application itself is easy to use on the internet and on mobile devices, but you can’t (as of this writing) publish to Twitter/Facebook directly from the smartphone/mobile apps; though you can record and upload to your online account, and then publish from there; even on the website via your mobile phone, just not with the app itself. The conformation on the mobile publishing limitation comes straight from AudioBoo themselves (James actually contacted them to ask). Alternatively you can e-mail audio clips to AudioBoo via BooMail, or record by calling their PhoneBoo and leaving a message, in case your phone doesn’t have web browsing/mobile internet features. (more on the alternatives here: http://audioboo.fm/about/boomail)

While free for recording three minute blocks of audio, AudioBoo offers Pro features, an upgrade you pay for, which include things like longer recording capability, the ability to moderate and edit the audio clips by more than one user and better quality. While it doesn’t have practical uses for the average person, it does appear to be useful for some types of businesses. (For more: http://audioboo.fm/about/pro)

AudioBoo also has some handy widget for web developers, bloggers, etc. You have a choice between a Follow Button or a Playlist Player to add to your internet presence. You can see ours, added today, up at the top on the right hands side. We can imagine some people would have a lot of fun with AudioBoo in conjunction with Tumblr accounts and other types of blogs.

So far there is one competitive alternative to AudioBoo, http://cinchcast.com/; however, advertising on the site is considered to be a bit heavier.

Find the smartphone/mobile apps here:
In the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=fm.audioboo.application&hl=en
For iPhone on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audioboo/id305204540?mt=8

So, an AudioBoo throwdown, you say? These are fun on Twitter...actually AudioBoo and Twitter are fun together in general, it's pretty cool to hear the voices of the people you've been reading for months, for some, years.

Here's what @Versability has to say about AudioBoo and hearing the voices of his followers:

Last week there was a group of our guy friends who read CJ's tweets, and this week it was our turn to get read by them...so for fun we decided we'd add them at the end of this entry today, as a fun example. We have to say, it's interesting hearing people read our Tweets, because they sound different than when we read them, that's for sure. We're supposed to award someone a Tweet of the Day for the best read...we're still waiting for @T0MFooL3RY's submission...we'll add that one tomorrow...

So...the first three submissions:

NOW WITH ADDED FOOLERY! (Added Friday, December 2)
#ff for @jstcallmefrank (mp3)
@C_J_Commode
Franks Boo (mp3)
*we wanted to note that while CJ apparently did a good job, he's got our particular mental disorder mixed up with...something else. We are not emotions...we all have emotions...but we're people, people. Didn't want to make anybody more confused here...we have names and shit*

AudioBoo
So...who will you Boo?

(that shit right there...that last sentence...trademark, copyright, ours now...unless...someone else said it before today and can prove it)
